The Kandy to Ella Train: Booking, Seats and What to Expect

Practical · · 2 min read

Everything to know about Sri Lanka's most famous train ride: how long it takes, which seats to book, where to sit and how to avoid the common mistakes.

The train from Kandy to Ella is one of the great railway journeys, and it deserves a bit of planning. Done well, it is the highlight of a trip. Done badly, it's a long day standing in a crowded doorway.

What the journey is

The line climbs from Kandy through the central highlands, passing Nanu Oya (the stop for Nuwara Eliya), Pattipola (among the highest railway stations in the country), Haputale and then down into Ella. Expect tea estates, mist, waterfalls and small stations that look unchanged for decades.

Duration: the timetabled trip is usually around seven hours, sometimes longer, and delays are common. Treat the schedule as a guide.

Should you do the whole thing?

Not necessarily. Many travellers find the most scenic stretch is between Nanu Oya and Ella, roughly three to four hours. If you'd rather not spend a full day on the train, we often drive from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya, visit a tea estate, and board at Nanu Oya.

Booking tips

  • Reserved seats sell out early, especially in the busy months (December to March, and around holidays). Book as soon as your dates are firm.
  • Different classes are sold, from reserved observation-car seats to second and third class. Reserved seats guarantee you a place; unreserved tickets do not.
  • Ticketing options and rules change, so check the current process with Sri Lanka Railways, or ask us to handle the booking for you.
  • If your ticket is for a specific carriage, board at the right end of the platform. It's often a long train.

Where to sit

The views are on both sides, and swapping seats with fellow passengers at the best moments is part of the fun. If you are in third class, you can open the windows and lean out of the open doors, which is wonderful, but pay attention to your safety and hold on to your belongings.

Making it a good day

  1. Go early. Morning departures have the clearest views, before cloud fills the valleys.
  2. Carry snacks and water. Vendors board at stations, but you can't rely on them.
  3. Pack light. Space for big luggage is limited. If you're travelling with us, your driver takes the bags ahead and meets you at the other end.
  4. Keep your schedule loose. Trains run late. Don't book a tight onward connection.

After the train: Ella

You'll arrive in the afternoon light, ideal for a walk to the Nine Arches Bridge. Read our notes on Ella for what to do next, and if you're deciding the best months for the hills, see when to visit Sri Lanka.

This ride is part of our 10-day tea and coast route, and we can add it to any journey. Tell us your dates and we'll book the seats.
